Posted November 05, 2018 08:04:13A new tree is a sight to behold, but you probably don’t realize that it’s one of the trees that the city of Montebello, California, has planted.
The tree has a big, brown trunk that’s covered with a red patch.
It has a crown and branches that protrude from the top of its trunk, making it look like a tree.
But the trees have an ugly history.
They’re often tagged with racist epithets like “monkey” and “monkey shit.”
They’ve also been subject to theft and vandalism.
In 2014, a tree was vandalized in the Montebellocos’ parking lot, but the tree was quickly removed and replaced with a new one.
A year later, a similar tree was planted in the same spot.
The tree has caused so much confusion that a local news station has started a campaign to educate residents about the history of the tree.
According to the station, the tree has been vandalized three times in the last 10 years.
“We’ve had a tree that was not only an ugly tree, but it’s also been a source of racial hate and vandalism,” said Montebellovos city manager James Stegall in a statement to the Associated Press.
