Posted May 22, 2018 06:20:59The mall shooting at a New York City shopping center on Monday left one dead and two others wounded, but authorities are now working to determine whether the gunman was a random act of violence or a terroristic act.
According to the New York Police Department, the gunman entered the mall’s mall-area plaza and started shooting as a random event.
The gunman was not armed and police have not identified him.
Hours later, the suspect was killed by police and a woman who was with him was hospitalized, according to NBC News.
The gunman was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and black shoes, according the New Jersey State Police.
He was shot and killed by officers who were responding to the mall for a report of a possible suspicious person, authorities said.
Authorities also said they are working with federal authorities in New York to investigate whether the suspect had any connection to the Islamic State group.
The suspect was known to authorities, and the New England area has been under heightened security following the December 2017 massacre of 22 people at a community college in Oregon, according, to NBC.ABC News’ Andrew Baker contributed to this report.
